Divide and rule is the gaining and maintaining of power through the fragmentation of society into divided groups. These groups then fight against each other, creating the need (in the absence of God) for a divine mediator. Or a mediator at least. And can therefore all be accommodated for by the overall status-quo power structures like ‘the state.’ That power which, through one means or another, probably facilitated or catalysed the creation of divisions in the first place.
